Discovery of legionella bacteria in water shuts school

A school in Hampshire has closed due to traces of a potentially fatal bacteria that was found in their water system.

Mason Moor Primary school in Millbrook has sent out letters to parents about the discovery of the legionella bacteria after a water quality test.

It says the health and safety of its pupils are paramount.

The school will remain shut until Thursday while the water system if disinfected.

The bacteria can result in Legionnaire’s disease, although education chiefs have said that parents should not be unduly concerned.

Tests to check the safety of the water have been ongoing and are due back tomorrow.

If the disinfection has been unsuccessful, the school may remain closed for a longer period.
